INTRODUCTION TO SPEAKING CLASS

INTRODUCTION TO SPEAKING CLASS

-          Welcome to Term 1 Pronunciation and Speaking Class. In this class, we will:

1.    Learn how to say the English letter sounds correctly with the use of phonetic symbols.

2.    Learn and use different parts of pronunciation: letter sounds, stress, intonation

3.    Learn how to speak about different topics by using new vocabulary and ways to express your ideas.

4.    Have fun speaking English!

-          This class is an opportunity for YOU to speak. So, use this opportunity to speak out as much as you can in class for practice. Be prepared for the teacher to do less talking and you to do more talking.

-          There’s no need to speak fast. The most important thing in first step is to have a correct sound. This may seem boring at first, but it will definitely help you to speak slowly and think about pronunciation.

-          Asking question is good. Just raise your hand. The teacher is here to help you, but he/she must know your question in order to do so. If you want to ask the teacher a question after class, that is also OK, but it is better to ask in class, because then everyone can learn.

-          Don’t worry about making mistakes. Mistakes are good, because when the teacher corrects you, then you will remember the correct way to speak.

-          Please try to confident. Confidence helps your speaking ability.

-          When someone is speaking, only offer correction AFTER your classmate is finished speaking.

-          Only one person should talk at a time. Please respect each other.

-          Sometimes we will speak as a whole class, but sometimes you will talk in pairs (with the person next to you), in groups of about 4 people. You will have more practice speaking with this learning method. Sometimes you will be asked to change partners.

-          You are expected to do all the homework and be prepared for speaking in class. If you prepare well, the class will be much more fun, and you will get a better grade. Doing you homework is also very good preparation for the final exam.

-          Use a dictionary to learn the correct pronunciation of words. When you know phonetic symbols and word stress marking, you will be able to look up any word in the dictionary and be able to pronounce it.

-          It is YOUR responsibility to learn. You will not improve much if you only practice in class. You should practice pronunciation and speaking at home at least 30 minutes every day. This means that in addition to written homework, you should review what we practiced in class. If you do this, you will be surprised how quickly you will improve. If you don’t, then you will not improve much.

If you practice just in class, you will only improve a very little bit.

If you also practice at home 30 minutes every day, then you will improve much more.

30 minutes is only a small amount of time to spend in comparison to the opportunities you will have if you speak English very well when you graduate.

The choice is yours!
